The history of the city of Aracaju is strongly related to the city of San Cristobal, for this was the ancient capital of the captaincy of Sergipe, the current state of Sergipe. It was from the decision to change the city that would house the provincial capital Aracaju and could be grown. Founded in 1855, was the first planned city of the Brazilian state, its shape reminds us of a chessboard. All streets are designed geometrically as a chessboard, to flow into the Rio Sergipe. Until then, the cities that existed before the seventeenth century have adapted to their natural topography, establishing an irregularity in the urban landscape. The engineer countered that Pirro was irregular and Aracaju, Brazil, an early example of this trend geometric.

The land where today stands Aracaju originated in land grants donated to Pero Gonçalves around the year 1602.Eram composed of 160 kilometers of coastline, but in all the banks there was no village, only populated by fishermen.

In the year 1699 has been news of a village appeared on the river Sergipe, near the region where it empties into the sea, with the name of St. Anthony of Aracaju. Her captain was John indigenous Mulato. In the middle of next century, in 1757, Santo Antonio de Aracaju lived without much growth and it was included as a site of the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Taking the Cotinguiba.

In the then capital of Sergipe, São Cristóvão, was clearly struggling with the ports. As the capital was in the state, navigating to the ports was only river, which was inconvenient, since the larger vessels had no account of the tonnage passing through, making the ports Sergipe serve only for small boats.

From 1854, the beach that is now the territory of Aracaju, near the mouth of the Rio Sergipe, aroused great interest of the government of the province of Sergipe, which transferred the Bureau of Customs and Provincial Income for that site and built a post office and a Sub-District Police. In addition, a port was built on the beach, called "Watchtower".

The province needed a larger size for the port of your progress. On March 2, 1855, the Legislative Assembly of the Province opened a session of the few existing homes on the beach of Atalaia. In this session, after having analyzed the situation it was in the province, Inácio Joaquim Barbosa, the first president of the province of Sergipe Del Rey, decided to transfer the capital of Sergipe, which was St. Christopher, to the port city that would be built there. The decision was greeted with surprise by those present.

Thus, on March 17, 1855, Joaquim Inacio Barbosa presented the project to raise the village of Santo Antonio de Aracaju to city and transfer of the provincial capital to this new city, which was called simply Aracaju. It was one of the most important and greatest impact in the history of Sergipe.
